In the year 1794, 24 soldiers of the Gothenburg Garrison Regiment set sail for the Swedish colony of Saint Bartholomew to serve as a Garrison. Now, more than 200 years later, the Westgiöta Gustavianer intend to repeat this endeavour. This is something we have jokingly talked about doing for 11 years and now finally the time has come..
The municipality on the island (Collectivité de Saint Barthélemy) and ASBAS (Association St. Barth des Amis de la Suéde) has invited our association to participate in the so called Swedish Month during November of 2010. We will then demonstrate garrison duties such as changing of the guard, marching with musket salute, enlisting, field camping and cooking (pea soup, pancakes and punch), dancing, singing and playing music. An idea is also to raise a three tongued Swedish banner at the cannon battery in Gustavia. In this way we will “awaken” the old Swedish garrison of the late 1700s. Once again the song “Gustafs Skål” will echo on the streets of Gustavia. We will be a group of around 14 persons consisting of 1 officer, 1 banner bearer, 1 drummer, 6 men and civil womenfolk, maids and farmhands; in other words, an extract of a typical garrison from the period. 5572-6699Responsible for this project is Mikael Tilander:Our partners is:
